Association of State Floodplain Managers - The Association of State Floodplain Managers is an organization of professionals involved in floodplain management, flood hazard mitigation, the National Flood Insurance Program, and flood preparedness, warning and recovery. ASFPM has become a respected voice in floodplain management practice and policy in the United States because it represents the flood hazard specialists of local, state and federal government, the research community, the insurance industry, and the fields of engineering, hydrologic forecasting, emergency response, water resources, and others.

Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) is an intergovernmental, regional disaster management organization with 16 participating states and headquarters in the Barbados. CDERA's main function is to launch an immediate and coordinated response to any disastrous event affecting any participating state, once the state requests such assistance.

 Center of Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance provides education, training, and research regarding civil-military operations, particularly those requiring international disaster management and humanitarian assistance. COE is a partnership of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM), the Pacific Health Services Support Area (HSSA) of Tripler Army Medical Center, and the University of Hawaii. Focusing on the Asia-Pacific region, the center conducts needs assessments, program development and evaluation, curriculum development, conferences, training programs, and research. COE is also collaborating with the University of Hawaii to offer Master's-level classes and eventually a degree in humanitarian assistance.

Disaster Center -  reports about ongoing disasters. The Disaster Center is also dedicated to promoting awareness of potential disasters, to providing disaster statistics, analysis of those statistics, and to provide information about mitigating those potential disasters. When a major disaster happens, The Disaster Center is activated. Traditionally, a Disaster Center is a place one can go to get information, and direction to aid after the disaster. Our web site has responded to a number of disasters.  Most of these have occurred in the United States. During each disaster we have learned a little bit better about how to provide information about the next disaster.

Disaster Handbook Web site is one component of the Comprehensive Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Education Module, which also includes: The Disaster Handbook (Print and CD-ROM Editions) and "Are You Ready?" a video based on the Disaster Preparedness Satellite Videoconference (available Fall 1998). The Module was prepared by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the Florida Cooperative Extension Service. This project was supported in part with funds from the United States Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES).

DISASTER RESEARCH CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE -The Disaster Research Center (DRC), the first of its kind in the world and the oldest in the United States, was established at the Ohio State University in 1963 and moved to the University of Delaware in 1985. DRC engages in a variety of social science research projects on group and organizational preparations for, responses to, and recovery from community-wide emergencies, particularly natural and technological disasters.

Emergency Information Infrastructure Partnership - Virtual Forum for Emergency Management Professionals (EMForum) was established in August 1997 by the Emergency Information Infrastructure Partnership (EIIP) - a cooperative effort of public and private organizations with an interest in emergency management, including the Congressional Fire Service Institute (CFSI), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA), the National Coordinating Council on Emergency Management (NCCEM), and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC).

EmergencyNet - From the Emergency Response & Research Institute

Environmental and Societal Impacts Group (ESIG) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as part of its multidisciplinary investigations into the societal impacts of weather, now publishes WeatherZine, an informal newsletter serving scholars and practitioners interested in the relation of society and weather. The site includes interesting statistics on the societal aspects of weather, as well as sections on floods, lightning, agriculture, the general public, and upcoming events.

Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) -  The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes— FLASH, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting disaster safety and property loss mitigation. Mission: To help reduce the number of deaths, injuries, suffering, property damage and economic losses caused by floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and man-made disasters. Commitment: To partner with like-minded organizations from the public, private and non-profit sector; to demonstrate leadership through creation of useful and reliable disaster safety education programs; and to sponsor ongoing outreach initiatives to encourage citizens to build, buy and use buildings that are constructed or retrofitted with disaster safety in mind.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) - FEMA - is an independent agency of the federal government, reporting to the President. Since its founding in 1979, FEMA's mission has been clear: to reduce loss of life and property and protect our nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards through a comprehensive, risk-based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

International Association of Emergency Managers - The International Association  of Emergency Managers (IAEM) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting the goals of saving lives and protecting property during emergencies and  disasters.

Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS)  - The member insurance companies of the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) envision a nation that builds the safest and most damage-resistant structures possible to protect its citizens. To enable that vision to become a reality, IBHS' members have directed it to fulfill a critically important mission: to reduce deaths, injuries, property damage economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies -  The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.

Founded in 1919, the International Federation comprises 176 member Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, a Secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. There are more societies in formation. The Red Crescent is used in place of the Red Cross in many Islamic countries.

National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) - NEMA is the professional association of state and pacific caribbean insular state emergency management directors committed to: Providing national leadership and expertise in comprehensive emergency management; Serving as a vital information and assistance resource for state and territorial directors and their governors; and Forging strategic partnerships to advance continuous improvements in emergency management.

National Floodplain Management Association Web SiteThe Floodplain Management Association is a nonprofit educational association. It was established in 1990 to promote the reduction of flood losses and to encourage the protection and enhancement of natural floodplain values. Members include representatives of federal, state and local government agencies as well as private firms.

Natural Hazards Center - The Natural Hazards Center, located at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA, is a national and international clearinghouse for information on natural hazards and human adjustments to hazards and disasters. The Natural Hazards Center carries out its mission in four principal areas: information dissemination, an annual workshop, research, and library services. The center's prime goal is to increase communication among hazard/disaster researchers and those individuals, agencies, and organizations that are actively working to reduce disaster damage and suffering. The Natural Hazards Center has a variety of resources available from the Internet.

National Institute for Urban Search and Rescue (NI/USR) Home Page includes, among other items, the latest issue of the NI/USR newsletter Press On!; a compendium of seismic information locations on the Net; earthquake preparedness information for child safety; as well as information about NI/USR itself.

NVOAD  National Voluntary Organizations Active -  in Disaster NVOAD coordinates planning efforts by many voluntary organizations responding to disaster. Through this web site are multiple links to 31 major Organizations including the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Adventist Community Services and many more. These major agencies provide some international services as well.

NDRD Natural Disaster Reference Database (NASA) - Goals and Objectives -To assemble and make available a bibliographic database on research, programs, and results which relate to the use of satellite remote sensing for disaster mitigation.
  • The Disaster Finder, is describe by the owners, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, as "a complete index to the best disaster Web sites on the Internet." It covers over 400 disaster information sites, and, using a keyword/concept search facility or category/type menu buttons, users can quickly identify specific sites providing the information they need. The sites found by using the search engine are prioritized according to their probable suitability, and the Disaster Finder even provides short previews of the selections so that individuals can see what kind of information is available.

Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) - The threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons didn't disappear with the end of the Cold War. In some ways, these threats have become more dangerous. The terrorists who planned and carried out the attacks on September 11th showed a willingness to take innocent lives, limited only by the capacity of the weapons available to them. The world's security may depend on who moves faster - those trying to get weapons material and know-how or those trying to secure them. 
Ted Turner and Sam Nunn have joined together to create the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a charitable organization working to reduce the risk of use and prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. NTI has brought together international experts with different views and experience who share a common goal of taking immediate action to close the gap between the global threat and the response. NTI seeks to increase public awareness, serve as a catalyst for new thinking and take direct action to reduce these threats.

United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR)  The future substantive orientation of internationally concerted action in the disaster reduction domain is encompassed in the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), proposed by the United Nations Secretary-General in pursuance of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) decision on successor arrangements for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR).

University of Wisconsin-Disaster Management Center - A unique educational resource, the University of Wisconsin-Disaster Management Center (UW-DMC), exists at the Department of Engineering Professional Development in the College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison. It offers educational programs on the management of situations created by disasters and emergencies in an international context. Workshops and seminars are offered in Madison and other cities throughout the world.
